Shared note | Willis Russell Hanks, 24, of Route 8, drowned in the Sangamon River Saturday night when the boat he was in capsized. The accident occurred a mile and a half downstream from the Circo Rendering Service on Hill Road, Harristown. Russell was gigging frogs with Eddie Earl Brownlee, also of Route 8, when the accident occurred. Brownlee told sheriff's deputies that the boat capsized after it was struck by a log floating in the river. The accident occurred between 10:30 and 11 p.m. Brownlee said he was unable to find Hanks in the dark when Hanks called to him for help. Hanks' body was recovered Sunday morning by the Decatur fire department. Mr. Hanks was born May 11, 1944 in Decatur, a son of Vincent Willis and Lucille Bernice Hanks of Route *. He was employed by the McElroy Construction Co. He was a member of Teamsters & Chauffers Union, Local 279, and St. Patrick Catholic Church. Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Darrell Hanks at home; four sisters, Mrs. Paul (Claudia Jane) Caldwell of Decatur, Teri Marlene, Geri Colleen and Pamela Sue, all at home; and grandparents, Mrs. C. R. Hanks of Decatur and Mrs. Russell Drake of Niantic. Funeral arrangements are incomplete in the J.J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home.
